Destroying Kate’s Art Studio (First Draft)
*A Poem Inspired by Sarah Schulman’s People in Trouble*
I slashed
a blooming canvas to shreds.
She snapped
a portrait in two,
a crusted face
smeared and blotched
by furious brushstrokes.
Gathering
the gorgeous shards,
we toss them into the air,
filling the empty space
with crazed laughter,
and the jagged fragments,
pitiful glimpses
of their pitiful original forms,
created
a beautiful mosaic
of inner rage.
An unfinished puzzle,
it begs us to complete it,
to which we say,
“Fuck no!”
